Hans Hasselfors asked:

Few things are more important to a golfer than a good golf bag. First off, golf bags come in many styles and a wide variety of colors. You can choose a bag for style, features or pick a color to match your mood.
Some have legs that fold out when they are placed on the ground and stand upright so the golfer doesn’t have to bend down and pick it up. That’s a nice feature in golf bags, especially if the golfer tends to walk the course, as many do. There is plenty of bending to be done when a golfer is trying to remove an obstacle from around his or her ball, or to get the ball out of the cup, so any way to avoid bending over is more than appreciated.
All golf bags have compartments where the golf clubs are to be placed. Each golfer has his or her own way of doing this and putting clubs where he or she wants them. Some golfers, though, are lazy and just stick their clubs in the compartments, grabbing whichever one they want when a particular club is needed. But, some golf bags have tubes to protect the club grips. These are nice to have. With the tubes, a golfer can get his or her clubs out easier. The clubs are never tangled up, and the grips last a lot longer.
Another important factor in choosing a golf bag is the number of pockets it has. Frankly, there’s no such thing as too many pockets in a golf bag. First, one of the pockets will be used to hold the golf bag’s hood. The hood is used to keep the clubs and bag from getting drenched when it rains. Another pocket will be used to keep extra towels (believe it or not, extra towels are important in the summer to keep the sweat off the brow and out of the eyes, along with keeping the hands relatively dry. Then, there is the pocket used for keeping the extra golf tees and possibly the divot tool. Finally, a pocket is needed for the golf balls themselves, and it doesn’t hurt to have a pocket to carry another dozen balls in, just in case.
Some courses are so difficult it is easy to lose a lot of balls during 18-holes of play. This makes having an extra box of balls around a good thing, but there has to be somewhere in the golf bag to keep them, which means another pocket.
Imagine trying to play golf without a bag. The golfer would be constantly stooping over picking up clubs, tees, balls, towels and the divot tool. Then he or she would have to walk to the ball, drop all of the clubs and stuff, select a club, hit the ball, and start the process all over again. It would be a major pain in the neck, and would make it nearly impossible to finish playing a round of golf. So, golf bags are an essential part of the game of golf.

Jonathan Blocker asked:

Because the City of New York predates the existence of golf in North America, it was not planned with golf and golfers in mind. Unlike Los Angeles, which has over 144 of them in its metro area, there are only 19 new york golf courses

and driving ranges within the five boroughs, 18 of which are publicly owned.

The good news is that rates on tee times and greens fees are very competitive at these public new york golf courses, and are significantly lower than the exclusive and pricey private country clubs – and are more accessible to boot.

City regulations require that residents of NYC have a Resident Permit, which is $6 per year for adults under the age of 62, and $2 for seniors and juniors under age 16. In addition, seniors and juniors can play for discounted rates at public new york golf courses.

One of the great things about public new york golf courses is that fact that greens fees do not vary a great deal. To be sure, prime tee times command higher rates, but you won’t be paying a dramatic premium for playing on the weekends. For example, playing an early nine holes on a Saturday or Sunday morning will cost you only $1.25 more than on a weekday morning. A full 18 holes on the weekend is $41; the prices drop to $33.25 for weekday mornings and $28.75 in the afternoon. Seniors can play a full 18 holes during the week for only $16.75, and juniors for only $7.50.

Another great thing about public new york golf courses is that these fees are the same whether you’re playing in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens or Staten Island. The exception is the Moshulu Driving Range in the Bronx; fees at this facility are slightly higher at some times of the week and slightly lower at others. In addition, Moshulu offers an excellent package deal for seniors that includes a cart and greens fees for two at one low price.

Visitors to New York City should be aware that the public new york golf courses are supported in part by the taxpayers of the city; therefore, those who are not NYC residents should expect to pay an additional fee on top of the required permit.

Public nyc golf courses nonetheless represent a tremendous bargain for golf lovers. They are easily accessible by automobile; most are served by NYC’s excellent public transit system as well. For those with youngsters, the City Parks Golf program offers free group golf lessons to children under 16 on public new york golf courses. Parents who are interested should contact the New York City Parks Foundation.

How ’bout them Cowboys? asked:

I started playing golf a few months ago and I’ve been able to make some pretty descent shots with every club EXCEPT Drivers. I don’t know why. I’ve been to the driving range a few times and I cant even hit it to the 50. I got a tip from a golf pro who said I have a good swing but I need to not move my head. I tried that and I did a little bit better, but I still need a lot of help with it. Do yall have any good tips?

Jonathan Blocker asked:

Like so many other enthusiasts, golf is your game of choice. You play as often as possible, because it fills so many roles in your life. Golfing is a popular pastime for several reasons.

One explanation for golf’s popularity is that it is available nearly everywhere in the United States. Most cities and towns offer a golf course for your enjoyment. It also makes for a wonderful vacation to travel to a foreign country to play golf there. Locations such as Scotland feature centuries-old courses, and you can get a sense of history playing on these ancient grounds.

Another reason why golf is popular is that it’s a great source of exercise. Golfers spend a lot of time walking courses, and all of that walking adds up to great cardiovascular exercise that will benefit your heart and lungs. Many golfers choose to do some golf conditioning before they start their regular season of play. Conditioning includes exercises for the major muscle groups that you will use when you play golf, plus additional exercises for flexibility and balance. These great ideas can help improve your game, prevent injuries during the season from strained muscles, and is another explanation for golf’s popularity.

Many people enjoy golf because it is an inclusive sport. Men, women, and children can all enjoy a game of golf. This makes golfing a great activity for the whole family to relish. A day out on the golf course gives everyone some exercise, gets everyone outside to breathe some fresh air, and gives an opportunity for some fun competition. Players from beginner to advanced can all find something to enjoy on a golf course when they are out playing. Anyone can take golf lessons to improve their game. Golf courses often offer lessons, and in this way you can learn more about the game and increase your skills. All of this will only go to help you enjoy your favorite sport even more.

Golf is also popular because the game can be played day or evening. Many courses offer lighted play areas, and you can book tee times for twilight play, which is a pleasant time to participate in the cool of the evening if you live in a hot-summer area of the country. If you are a morning person and feel more focused in the early hours, you can make golf course reservations for then, and fully relish your time spent out on the course. The flexibility with which you can schedule tee times also allows you to get a game in before or after work or school. Whether you play for the availability, exercise, inclusiveness or timing, golf is a fun game that gains in popularity from year to year.

Lind Golf asked:

Ok. Here are the basics. A golf club has three parts - the head, the shaft and the grip. A standard set of golf clubs consists of three woods (the Driver, #3, and #5 fairway woods), eight irons (#3, #4, #5, #6, #7, #8, #9, and PW), and a putter - that’s twelve clubs in all. According to the rules of golf, and we should all play by the rules, you can carry fourteen clubs in your bag, so many golfers add a specialty wood or another iron.

Now, let’s have a look at the different types of clubs.

Drivers & Fairway woods

These clubs are used to hit longer shots. That’s a basic yet apt way to look at it. If a golf hole is a par four or five from tee to green, most golfers would choose to use a wood.

The driver, or the 1 Wood, has the lowest loft of any golf club. Loft is the angle of the club face that controls trajectory and affects distance. A driver has a loft between 7 and 12 degrees. Better golfers have traditionally favored drivers with less than 10 degrees of loft, which require a lot more skill to hit.

Most golfers also carry a #3 and #5 fairway wood as part of their arsenal. A #3 wood has a loft of 15 degrees, and a #5 wood has a loft of 18 degrees. The higher the golf club number, the higher the loft. The #3 and #5 wood are commonly referred to as fairway woods, because they are most often used during the second shot of play, when you are supposed to be on the fairway.

Hybrids

Hybrids are a recent innovation to golf. A hybrid is a combination of an iron and a wood and is an easier to hit alternative to a long iron. Hybrids are versatile enough to be used in any situation. Hybrids come in a range of four lofts - 16 (#2), 19 (#3), 22 (#4) and 25 (#5) Degrees. Hybrids replace their equivalent number long iron, e.g. a #3 hybrid will replace a #3 iron and a #2 hybrid can be used to replace a #5 fairway wood.

Irons

Irons are generally used for shorter distances and more control than drivers and fairway woods. The closer you are to the green, the higher the iron you will use. A standard set of irons consists of #3, #4, #5, #6, #7, #8 and #9 and the PITCHING WEDGE (PW). A sandwedge is generally a good option to purchase for shots out of sand traps. The #3 and #4 irons are harder to hit than the higher numbered irons. Many golfers choose to replace the #3 and #4 iron with higher lofted woods or hybrids which are easier to hit than traditional long irons, resulting in comparable distances.

Wedges

Wedges are really just specialty irons. The first wedge is the Pitching Wedge (PW), which is usually between 52 and 56 degrees in loft. The PW is the highest lofted iron in a standard set and lowest loft of the wedges. Lob wedges range from 58 to 64 degrees and are used for close range short and high shots to overcome obstacles close to the green. Wedges are extremely useful for your short game and it is beneficial to keep a selection of them in your bag.

Sand Wedges are another type of wedge and are designed to get you out of the dreaded sand traps. They have a shorter shaft and a more angled face to get under the ball in order to exit a bunker.

Putters

As the adage goes “Drive for show, Putt for dough”. The putter usually gets you in the hole, so it can be assumed, that choosing the right putter is critical to your game. Putters come in various styles and types.: short, belly, long, bent, center-hosel, heel-toe, mallet, and so on. When choosing a putter the main things to consider are the: weighting, balance and feel. Better putters provide alignment aids to help you visualize the line from your ball to the target.
