J. Brian Keith asked:

This interesting article addresses some of the key issues regarding golf courses. A careful reading of this material could make a big difference in how you think about golf courses.

Is everything making sense so far? If not, I’m sure that with just a little more reading, all the facts will fall into place.

One thing every golfer will agree on is no golf course is ever the same. While playing different courses is fun and challenging, playing ones home course, no matter how many times it is done, is always going to be different.

Yes, it is the same course, nothing has been changed, except for the position of the cup on the green, but no golf course is ever exactly the same two days in a row, or, for that matter, the same day.

Will Smith in the movie “The Legend of Bagger Vance” told his protégé how the grass follows the sun, which means a putt that broke one way in the morning will break in the opposite direction in the afternoon.

Another thing that makes the same course different every day is the weather conditions. Weather plays a big factor in golf, and how a course plays. A wet course will play slower and the ball will not travel as far after hitting the ground. On a dry course, the ball will roll farther after hitting the turf.

A course will also play differently in hot or cold weather. Colder weather keeps the ball from traveling as far, while a well hit ball will go further on a warm or hot day. Additionally, if an area has been dry for any length of time, the fairways, unless they are watered heavily every day, will become as hard as concrete and provide extra distance once the ball hits the ground.

Then comes the golfer’s attitude. Yes, the frame of mind a golfer is in will have a direct affect on how well he or she plays and reacts to the course. Golf is a game requiring a calm, focused mind, so the player can concentrate on what he or she is trying to do on any particular shot.

One other thing that will make the same course play differently is how the grounds are kept. If the fairway is allowed to grow a little long, balls will not be able to roll as far, whereas, if they are kept trimmed close to the ground, the ball will roll further.

The rough is a whole other problem, as are other obstacles on the course, such as sprinkler heads. The rough is always going to be thick and hard to play out of, but a heavy, wet rough makes it almost impossible for a golfer to do much more than simply attempt to chip back onto the fairway. Sprinkler heads, which are positioned all over the course, will have an adverse affect on a ball that happens to hit them.

Believe it or not, who a person is playing with, or if he or she is playing alone when he or she normally plays with someone else will affect the way the course is played. So, this only goes to show how the same course, no matter how many times a person plays it, is never the same course twice.

Knowing enough about golf courses to make solid, informed choices cuts down on the fear factor. If you apply what you’ve just learned about golf courses, you should have nothing to worry about.

What are your opinions on Mr. Trump’s plan to build the world’s finest golf course in Aberdeenshire? Do you feel that the potential economic boost and increase in tourism in the area outweighs the destruction of the rare sand dunes and wildlife living there? Do you feel the development should go ahead or not, and why?

Robert Santry asked:

Whether you’re a seasoned golfing enthusiast who always keeps their clubs on them, or are the type who plays the odd game now and then to relax, luxury holidays in South Africa are impressively well catered for. South Africa’s varied terrain makes it a unique destination for golfers, with a mix of breathtaking coastal courses, a fine elevated selection and a good number included in international events. Then of course there’s the weather - the climate is absolutely ideal, with the bright sunshine perfect for those who like to spend their times on the fairways and outside the clubhouse.

Here are some of the best golf courses in South Africa. If you only play a couple of times while out there, make sure one of these is on your list:

Leopard Creek

Leopard Creek is pretty much the undisputed jewel in South Africa’s golfing crown, and is a frequent inclusion in ‘World’s Best Courses’ lists. If you only play a handful of courses on your golf holiday in South Africa, make sure this is one of them. As well as being an entertaining and challenging course in its own right, what is really unique about Leopard Creek is its location: right on the border of the world-renowned Kruger National Park. The course (a Gary Player design) is sculpted to make the most of its location, and you shouldn’t be surprised to see a number of moving hazards around the water features, as warthogs, giraffes and crocodiles have been known to wander the course, and the trees are full of exotic birds too. With this kind of scenery, it’s an unforgettable round of golf, but don’t let it spoil your concentration for the final hole: a dramatic island green that has been known to make and break scorecards!

Gary Player Country Club

Unsurprisingly, this South Africa golf course was also designed by the legendary Gary Player, and it’s very much a challenge fitting for the man himself. This is one of the longest and toughest courses in the country, and not one for South Africa holiday makers who barely play. If you have the skills though, this course is another which frequently sneaks into ‘worlds best’ lists, albeit at a lower entry point than Leopard Creek. You need to have an accurate approach and watch out for the copious bunkers and water hazards to get a decent score here.

Wild Coast Country Club

Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security by the incredible Indian Ocean views - this is actually quite a tricky course, especially if you find yourself straying into the rough, or the coastal winds whip up! It’s quite a varied course, featuring several unexpected changes in elevation, which offset the relatively wide fairways. Look out for the thirteenth hole, which is a particularly taxing one, craftily designed to be up there with some of the best in the world. If you’re heading for a golf holiday in South Africa, this is a must.

Fancourt Hotel, Country Club and Golf Estate

Yet another Gary Player design that’s world renowned for a great round of golf, the Fancourt Hotels’ golf course is located on the charming southern Cape. The views are stunning, as is the golf - though it took a lot of effort to make. Over 700,000 metres of earth were moved to make this links style course on a surface that was originally flat! It was well worth the effort though, and if Links style play is your preference then this is certainly worth a visit. The hotel itself is very nice as well, and a good choice if you want to combine a few rounds of golf with your luxury holiday in South Africa.

Arabella Country Club

Not even 10 years old yet, the Arabella Golf Club has come a very long way in a short time, and is now one of the most celebrated golf courses in South Africa. Designed by the celebrated South African golf architect Peter Matkovich, the course is a wonderfully memorable mix of rolling fairways, cheeky bunkers and well placed water traps. It’s quite a sight too, as the course borders South Africa’s largest natural lagoon!

There are plenty of golf courses in South Africa, and although most struggle to match up to the high standards laid out by these ones, the perfect conditions mean you’re pretty much guaranteed an enjoyable round wherever you go. So if you’re planning on a luxury holiday in South Africa, don’t rule out some quality time on the fairways!

Joe Kensingtons asked:

There are many advantages and benefits you can enjoy by choosing to get a golf course membership rather than playing at different golf clubs in your area. Consider some of the top benefits and reasons for joining a local country club and then decide whether or not joining your local golf club is a good idea for you.

First, most golf clubs systems if not all of them provide you with a handicap tracking system. This makes it easier for you to keep track of your golf scores. Rather than sending your scorecard to a golf association for a real handicap which means you are allowed to play in golf tournaments.

Second, by having a membership to a local golf club you can have access to facilities with locker rooms. You may also be allowed to use their restaurant as a meeting place. This allows you to get to know fellow members better and make it easier when you are going to play golf to find a player you can team up with.

Third, if you have a membership to a local golf course then you are more likely to take a drive down there for a few hours of practice or a round of golf when you have the time. If you are unfamiliar with a golf course you are less likely to go when you have the time or you will have a harder time getting available times. The most times you can practice your golf strategy the better you will become.

Fourth, those with a golf club membership often have a better game plan approach since they are more familiar with the course. You know what lies ahead when you are familiar with a golf course when makes it easier for you to make your club selection at each hole.

Fifth, when you regularly visit a golf course that you have a membership at you will start to memorize the yardage at each hole. This will also help with your understanding of your yardage capabilities.

Six, many golf clubs will provide you with a trade-off system. This is an excellent opportunity to visit different golf courses in the area in exchange for letting members from other clubs play at your golf course. So you can still have a different challenge when you want it, rather than being stuck at one golf course all the time.

Seventh, by being a member of a golf course you are more likely to take part in golf tournaments. Check the member’s bulletin board at your local golf course and you will be informed of any upcoming events. Consider taking part in a tournament that interests you to have a unique challenge.

Eighth, with a golf course membership you only pay a yearly green fee at the country club and then you can play unlimited golf. There are only certain day and hour restrictions which you will be notified about up front when deciding whether or not you want the membership.

Lastly you have a better chance of getting last minute tee times. If you are a member you will often be allowed to join up with other members.

A 27 hole championship golf course closed in central wisconsin two years ago to build an aquaplex on top of it. The aquaplex fell through but the golf course remained closed. At the time of closing, they had the largest womens league in the state and a very busy public course. This course needs to be reopened!
