How to make a machine that reads out the distance that a golf ball goes from a tee?

I had in mind like a police radar - they sell on eBay for $50. Anybody ever use one like this? My goal was to play a scored game from one tee and improve driving swing while reducing costs and time invested in golf green fees and equipment and memberships.
