Wayne Armstrong asked:

When your ball leaves the golf tee and you play your shots towards the green with your fairway woods or irons you are engaging in the powerful side of the game of golf. This is the part of the game where technology and muscle power can play a big part in far your ball travels towards the green.

However, when you have finally managed to man handle your ball onto the green you need to change your personality. The power and aggression needs to be swapped out for delicacy and finesse. You don’t so much hit the ball across the green as feel it on its way. Accuracy and consistency play a huge part and managing to achieve a consistent style which allows you to hit the ball squarely and with the right weight time after time. Watch the different styles of putting the next time you watch a match or the next time you are in a position to watch other players on the course. Each one will be different. This is because the putting part of the game of golf is very personal to each individual player as they are at the point where they have to do what they have to do to get the ball into the hole.

The starting point on the journey towards a comfortable putting style is choosing a club you are comfortable with. Forget the science involved with why one putter is better than another. Decide with your heart not your head when you choose your putter. If you are comfortable with it then you will be able to aim it and hit the ball more consistently than if you have to work hard.

Having said that putting is all about feel and personality there are a couple of basic things which will help you on your way to achieving this. The first is your stance and the position of the ball in relation to you, the player. Your toes should be point straight ahead and you should be able to draw a straight line across the top of both feet which runs parallel to the direction you want the ball to travel. You should be very slightly behind the ball so that it lines up with the toe closest to the hole. Make sure that when you bring the club forward you strike the ball cleanly and more importantly square on. This will ensure that the ball travels along the line you intend it to.

If you play right handed, one of the things to take note of is that you should feel you are trying to push the club head through the ball with your right hand with your left hand there only to provide stability. To get the feel for this you may want to try a few putts with your right hand only. The grip on the club is going to be around four times stronger with your right hand than your left. Swing the club head back gently, don’t snatch at it and the push the club head through the ball along the line you want it to travel.

As I said before, putting is a very personal thing and the only way you will develop a personal style is by practicing. At some point a putt will just feel right. Go with that one.
